History of the site: This facility accepted municipal sludge, liquid septic waste and allegedly liquid industrial wastes, which were deposited in a series of 12 lined & unlined scavenger lagoons.
Monitoring wells detected metals and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), including toluene and tetrachloroethene, also an increase in the concentrations of total dissolved solids, chloride and iron down-gradient of the site. More monitoring wells showed the groundwater standards were exceeded for iron, manganese, nitrates, selenium, chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, and dichloromethane. In 1994, the Papermill Road facility was listed as a Class 2a Super Fund site. The facility was closed when it did not meet the NYS environmental criteria for operation. This site was never re-mediated...just de-listed! In December 2006, property adjacent to the site was purchased by the Town of Brookhaven because a builder was unable to construct homes due to environmental issues.
